There's an abundance of movies that combine large bags of money and high speed car chases.
Face Ray (Robert Carlyle) is a 'Face" or an honourable man in British criminal parlance. He and his mates rob things, like an armored car service, to have a little spending money. Like all entertaining crime stories, something goes wrong. First the screw up the heist by taking all the small bills and leaving millions behind. With only 60,000 pounds each, there five member gang starts to turn on themselves. By morning, only 4 left and all 5 bags of money are missing. The money's gone somewhere and three more people turn up dead, so who's ripped them off. They band together and scour the city in search of clues and their cash, but it's far from simple. Much grittier than a Guy Ritchie film and rest assured there are no pretty boys in this cast. Better than most and directed by Antonia Bird who also gave us Ravenous. 107 minutes Rates R British w/o subtitles.
Adrenaline Drive Suzuki has a boring life, no love life and a crappy job with a boss that constantly brow beats him. This all ends when he rear ends a car owned by a yakuza (Japanese mobster). To repay his debt, Suzuki is pressed in to service by the mob and his life will never be the same. Mainly it is a love story, but it would take longer to explain than if you just watched it. Directed by Shinobu Yaguchi. 1998 Japanese with English subtitles.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels They need to raise a half million quid in a hurry or Hatchet Harry will start slicing off their fingers. It seems these four losers dropped a bundle to Harry in a rigged card game and they go to great criminal lengths in an effort to save their digits. This is actually a comedy and it was written & directed by Guy Ritchie . Sting is in it, too. 1998 Briitish w/American sub-titles Rated R 106 minutes
Run, Lola, Run/Lola Rennt This is a 90 minute high energy German music video masquerading as a full length feature. A non-stop crime movie not unlike Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels; we follow the money as the red headed Lola literally runs around Berlin trying to help her boyfriend out of a jam. You will be exhausted by the end. Get the DVD for an excellent voice over track by the director.
u-turn Sometimes Oliver Stone movies get better if you let them age a little, and sometimes they don't. This film got mixed reviews when it was released back in 1997, but it really ain't that bad. Sean Penn is Bobby, a drifter with a bag of money and an old Mustang that blows a radiator hose in the middle of Arizona. He entrusts his car to grotty Daryl (Billy Bob Thornton) and then gets picked up by Grace McKenna (Jennifer Lopez). She is a small town lonely housewife looking for someone to help hang her drapes. Well Mr. McKenna (Nick Nolte) shows up, pops Bobby in the nose and then tries to hire him to murder his wife. You'll also find Claire Danes as a local hotty with her pugnacious boyfriend played by Joaquin Phoenix and John Voight as a blind, semi-prophetic Amerindian. The overall story is so-so but you just might want to see it for the talent. 1997 Rated R
The Last Seduction Linda Fiorentino plays a seductress that the Pope could not refuse. Her husband, Bill Pullman is a Dentist who makes a big score selling pharmaceutical cocaine. He comes home with a shopping bag full of cash, which she steals while he's in the shower. She evades her pursuers and eventually doubles back to finish off her husband. If Fatal Attraction did not keep your spouse from straying this one certainly will. She is so beautiful, why must she be so mean? Directed by John Dahl 1994 110 minutes Rated R
8 Heads In A Duffel Bag Joe Pesci is in charge of a gym bag that contains 8 heads that are proof of a hit. He loses the bag and Andy Spade ends up with it. It's a silly film and a stretch for this page, but where else could we put it? Rated R 1996
