Home Movie Projectors – Cheap, DVD and Blu-ray Projectors

Home movie projectors are an affordable way to get the sensation of watching a film on the big screen without actually standing in line and putting up legions of text-obsessed teenagers. Just pop your DVD or Blu-ray into the home movie projector, set up a screen (or point it at the wall), and turn down the lights: That’s all there is to it. It’s perfect for families who want to quickly convert their living room or den into a makeshift movie theatre. Many folks also get a kick out of setting up inflatable screens in the backyard and having a movie party for the whole neighborhood.

Of course, like any piece of home theatre equipment, top-end home movie projectors can cost an arm and a leg. But I’m here to tell you that cheap DVD and Blu-ray projectors are available, especially if you know where to look. I scoured a number of websites to find the best prices on home movie projectors, and now it’s time to share my findings.

It should be noted that I don’t own a home movie projector myself. I do, however, have a buddy who owns one and likes to set it up in the backyard. He lives way out in the country, so there are no neighbors to complain about movies blaring at one in the morning. Believe me, you’ve never lived until you’ve watched Die Hard outdoors while drinking a beer and relaxing in a swimming pool. And horror movies really seem to freak people out when they can hear crickets chirping and real-life coyotes howling in the distance (which is a perfect excuse for getting closer to your significant other).

Affordable Home Movie Projectors

LCD Movie Projector – Whether you’re looking for a projector to watch movies or play video games, this affordable option from Amazon (via the folks at Lonestar) gives you plenty of options. The cost is a reasonable $220.98, and it’s a fine way to experience the excitement of home movie projectors without taking out a second mortgage. It features 640×480 pixels, 5” LCD technology, and works with all major video game consoles (as well as DVD players). It weighs a total of 6.4 pounds, and the lamp should be good for 5000 fun-filled hours of cinema and gaming.

Optoma DLP Home Theatre Projector – I found this product at Best Buy, and the current sale price is only $199.99. Highly portable (only 1.7 pounds), you’ll get sharp images with 854×480 resolution, plus a contrast ratio of 800:1. Wide images can be counted on to always be displayed in the correct proportions, whether the projector is 2 or 12 feet away from the screen. Compatible with any DVD player, this model also allows you to hook up to your PC for more viewing options. And don’t worry about the lamp burning out anytime in the future; it’s guaranteed to last for at least 20,000 hours.

Optoma PK-102 Pico Pocket Projector – Radio Shack doesn’t carry a ton of home movie projectors at their online store, but this tiny model caught my eye. The price also drew my attention, as it’s just $249.99. With a VGA connection, it can be run straight from a laptop or PC, and you’ll be able to display up to 4GB of information (including 8 hours of video). Your movie can be displayed on any surface, and this pint-sized product will project up to 60 feet. And for those who hate lugging around heavy pieces of equipment, please note that the Pico Pocket Projector only weighs 4.6 ounces (and that’s including the battery).

Dg-737 HD Video LCD Projector – Another find from my trip to Amazon, this $214.49 home movie projector allows you to choose from an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9, and the projection range can be anywhere from 3 to 10 feet. Two speakers are built-in, and it’ll play any movie labeled NTSC, PAL, or SECAM. Another option for those seeking an affordable home movie projector.

Optoma GT700 3D Game Time Projector – At the moment, there’s no such thing as a cheap Bu-ray movie projector. Still, this version from Optoma was the most affordable that I could find. It normally lists for $749 on Amazon, but a third party seller on the site was offering it for $699. You could also roll the dice on a refurbished version for only $499.99. The display technology is made by Texas Instruments, so you can count on the picture being crystal clear every time. And let’s not forget the fact that it plays Blu-rays, DVDs, video games, Internet content, and even 3D Blu-ray movies. The latter are becoming increasingly popular, so getting a setup like this will help keep you on the cutting edge of home theatre entertainment. There’s also a built-in 10-watt speaker system, so you’ll never have to strain to hear what Benicio del Toro is mumbling about.

HDMI Video Theater Projector – This piece of equipment lists for $324.95 on Amazon, and it’s suitable for playing DVDs, video games, cable, or anything off your computer (heck, it can even be plugged into a VCR). The ratio can be adjusted from 4:3 to 16:9, and the lamp life averages 6000 hours. There’s a built-in speaker and television tuner, and a remote control comes as part of the package. And while $324 isn’t chump change, it’s considerably cheaper than the Amazon home movie projectors that run in the $1000 to $2000 range.

Digital Galaxy LCD Movie Projector – I’ve never heard of Digital Galaxy before, but anyone who’s looking for cheap home movie projectors can’t afford to be too picky. With a price of $258.95 from Amazon, it’s a great entry level product that plays DVDs and also works for video game consoles. Includes 5” LCD technology, 50” to 150” diagonal projection, built-in speakers, and a lamp life of 5000 hours.

Home Movie Projector Accessories

Once you’ve purchased your home movie projector, you’ll need something to display the images on. Sure, you can always use a bare wall, but these items are even better (and way cooler).

Sima XL-72 72″ Inflatable Home Theater Kit – Priced at $133.54 from Amazon, this inflatable product is ideal for backyard viewing (it’s what my previously mentioned friend owns). The screen, once inflated, measures 72” diagonally, and it includes two sets of 16” pontoons for increased viewing elevation. The latter feature really gives you that drive-in movie feel, and the included air pump keeps you from having to run to Wal-Mart to buy yet another piece of equipment. Front and rear projection models are supported by this model, and the whole thing inflates within five minutes.

Epson Duet 80-Inch Dual Aspect Ratio Projection Screen – If you’re looking for a movie screen that can be set up quickly and disassembled just as fast, give this model from Amazon a try. It’s listed at $121.19, and it’ll work for any business projector or home movie setup. Even better, the screen adjusts to display movies in either a 4:3 (standard) or 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio. It forms a carrying case when closed, and it can be mounted on the wall or kept upright with an included floor stand. Weighs just over 25 pounds.

So the next time you’re searching for cheap home movie projectors of DVDs or Blu-ray movies, be sure to take a gander at the products listed above. Each time I watch a movie on a projector, I’m reminded of going to the drive-in as a child or viewing movies in elementary school (my favorites were the animated Lord of the Rings and Jacques Cousteau documentaries narrated by Rod Serling). If you’d like to capture a little of that childhood magic for yourself, you could do a lot worse.

Collectible, Out of Print, and Unusual DVDs and Blu-ray Movies

The only thing I love better than odd films are collectible, out of print, and unusual DVDs and Blu-ray movies. Many of these titles can sell for hundreds of bucks on eBay or Amazon, making them an interesting investment option for cinema lovers with dollar signs in their eyes.

The following article lists a number of rare and unusual movies to get your collection started, although there are hundreds more to track down when you have the time. Just keep in mind that rare films diminish in value as soon as you open the packaging, so you may want to get one copy to resell and another for your own enjoyment.

The Criterion Collection and SteelBook Packaging

In addition to the normal list of out-of-print DVDs and limited edition Blu-rays, this article also deals with movies from The Criterion Collection and those released with SteelBook packaging. Since you may not be familiar with either of these, I felt an explanation was in order.

SteelBooks are similar to normal DVD or Blu-ray releases, with the exception of being enclosed in a metal case. This immediately raises the value of the product, but you’ll need to handle them gently, as the soft metal exterior is surprisingly easy to dent if you let your kids loose around it.

The Criterion Collection specializes in films that would normally get a limited release in artsy theatres (although titles like Armageddon and RoboCop have also made the cut), and their presentation is first-class all the way. These collectible DVDs and Blu-ray discs cost more initially, but their value really skyrockets when they go out of print. Even if you’re not in the market for rare DVDs, I would suggest The Criterion Collection for anyone who enjoys quality cinema.

Limited Edition, Rare, and Collectible Movies

Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom – One of the most in-demand titles for collectors of rare DVDs, especially the first edition from the Criterion Collection that was pulled after licensing disputes with the estate of director Pier Paolo Pasolini. It’s also one of the most controversial films ever made, as it depicts a group of 18 children being kidnapped in Fascist Italy and subjected to numerous forms of degradation and torture.

Bullitt – Released in 2000, this version of the classic Steve McQueen cop movie sells for hundreds of dollars on some sites I’ve seen (with used versions listing for just under $100). As if the legendary car chases through the streets of San Francisco aren’t enough, just check out all the other extras you get: 8 original, limited edition lobby cards; original one-sheet movie poster; exclusive, limited edition senitype; and a copy of the original shooting draft script.

Death Proof and Planet Terror – Released at the theatres as Grindhouse, this Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez box-office flop was sold individually on the home video market in an effort to make as much money as possible. The SteelBook versions were peddled through Best Buy in the United States, although another exclusive version was also released by Blockbuster.

The Killer – The Criterion Collection version of this John Woo action classic about a hitman (Chow Yun-Fat) looking to pull one last job has been out of print for a while, and its value just keeps going up. It’s not unusual to see it selling for several hundred dollars, and this version of The Killer is far superior to the one later released by those money-hungry Weinstein brothers.

Heathers – This 2008 limited edition box set brings you Christian Slater and Wynona Ryder in all their teen angst glory, and you can expect to find it selling for more than $50 on both Amazon and eBay. It’s well worth the price, too, as it features two discs packed with 20th anniversary extras, as well as bonus material including: hardcover Heathers yearbook, a “Big Fun” t-shirt, and Heathers-themed magnets. The whole product comes packaged in a metal school locker with a working combination latch.

Watchmen – Ultimate Cut – The director’s cut of Zack Snyder’s moody superhero movie is presented, with the animated Tales of the Black Freighter also woven into the storyline. This makes for an exceptionally long film, but one that’s worth watching for devotees of comic book god Alan Moore. The other discs on this out-of-print Blu-ray release are packed with extras, ensuring that you’ll get plenty of bang for your buck.

Nemesis – A hard-to-find science fiction film about an LAPD cop (Olivier Gruner) loaded down with cybernetic implants and manipulated into taking on a dangerous revolutionary group. The 1998 DVD release has been out of print for years, and you’re unlikely to find this Albert Pyun title (which spawned three sequels) for less than $100.

Seven Samurai – If you’re looking to make money off of this collectible DVD, you’ll want to make sure you get the first printing. You can tell this one by the inclusion of the film restoration demonstration on the extras, which upset the Toho Company and led to Criterion re-releasing the Akira Kurosawa samurai classic without it.

Pig – A limited edition release of the 23-minute experimental film starring the late Rozz Williams (former lead singer of Christian Death). Co-directed by Williams and underground filmmaker Nico B., the surreal, silent horror film was released in 1998 and revolves around a serial killer heading to the desert in preparation for a human sacrifice.

The Big Lebowski – The 2005 release known as the “Achiever’s Edition” is the one that’s most in-demand among collectors, thanks to packaging that includes a bowling towel, coasters with the main characters, and eight photo cards taken on-set by Jeff Bridges. If you like to smoke weed and drink White Russians while pondering your collection of rare DVDs and Blu-rays, then this title is essential.

If you enjoy collectible, out of print, and unusual DVDs and Blu-ray movies, you’ll be amazed at the number of websites and forums dedicated to this hobby niche. And while it does require a bit of surplus cash to seriously pursue, the thrill of finding such titles at a flea market or garage sale will often overshadow any hesitations you might have about forking over some bread.

Dr Pepper Coupons – 2012, Free, Printable, Online

Dr Pepper coupons are going to be easier to find than most of the coupons I’ve covered on this website. Dr. Pepper is not only a major soft drink, but it’s a company that sells a whole lot of other sodas, fruit drinks, and energy drinks. Walk into most movie theaters (in my part of the country, anyway) and you’ll find Dr Pepper fountain drinks being served.

So I wanted to point the movie goers to a few Dr Pepper coupons to help lower the cost of your next movie night, especially if you’re going to watch one of those HDX 3D movies, with ticket prices that are virtual extortion.

The main problem you might have is sifting through coupons for A&W Root Beer, Seven-Up, and the other drinks Dr. Pepper markets. These days, the official company name is the Dr. Pepper-Snapple Company, so you might even find cross-promotions with the popular Snapple drink line.

2012 Dr Pepper Coupons

Go to the Dr. Pepper coupons on RetailMeNot and you can find a fountain drink coupon code with a 100% success rate and an average of $1.00 of savings per use. Link to the site to read more details. The promo code contains the note “no purchase necessary of Dr. Pepper”, but it doesn’t mention what the bargain is. I’d be tempted to guess it’s another fountain drink coupon, but the code is clearly differently. Use the code given to do more research.

Further study has shown several other fountain drink coupons with different codes, so I bet all of these are Dr. Pepper fountain drink coupons. Each is for $1.00 off the purchase of a fountain drink, so that’s going to be a highly effective coupon.

One good thing about going to a good Internet coupons site is that you can see when the coupon was loaded and the last time it was used. If you’re searching for 2012 coupons, you’re going to find out real quick if these are 2012 Dr Pepper coupons.

Dr. Pepper Bottle Caps

Some Dr. Pepper bottle caps have special discounts, rebates, and payback offers on them. I found a code on Retail Me Not which claims to offer savings.

Since many bottle caps are one-time discounts that must be presented with the bottle cap itself, I question whether this would have any success for you.

Printable Dr. Pepper Coupons

Go to the Dr. Pepper official site to check out the latest offers from Dr. Pepper. The company recently launched a major add campaign, the “Always One of a Kind” campaign, starting with a Superbowl commercial that is both brand new, but also hearkens back to a previous generation of Dr. Pepper advertisements. Back in the old days (that is, 1978), you’d see a Dr. Pepper commercial with a song that said, “I’m a Pepper, he’s a Pepper, she’s a Pepper, we’re a Pepper. Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper, too?”.

In the latest commercial, you say people across a modern city suddenly putting on t-shirts that start with “I’m a…” and they fill in their own individual definition of themselves. If you go to the Dr. Pepper site, create a profile, and fill in what you are, you’ll be able to print off a free coupon. You can put in just about anything that isn’t obscene or offensive, so here are a few of my suggestions: “socialist”, “soccer hooligan”, “gray alien”, or “Coke drinker”.

Dr Pepper Facebook

Dr Pepper has a huge presence on the social networking site, Facebook. The Dr Pepper Facebook page has nearly 11.5 million likes and nearly 123,000 people talking about it. This is a good community to talk about Dr Pepper items and learn about the latest offers. The people here love Dr Pepper and how best to get more off it. Sign up as a friend and do the same for any newsletters or RSS information streams, because you’ll be able to get all kinds of coupon and promotional information.

One bit of information I got was the story of why it’s called “Dr. Pepper” and whether the proper spelling is “Dr Pepper” without the period or not. Dr. Pepper was created by a drug store owner in Waco, Texas, in 1885. The druggist was Wade Morrison. When Wade Morrison lived in Virginia, he was in love with the daughter of Dr. Charles Pepper, so he named his new drink after his lost love’s father. In the 1950s, the Dr. Pepper company removed the period from its official name, so the correct and official name is “Dr Pepper”. Now you know.

Free Dr Pepper

Despite all this coupon information, in 2012, it’s still best to find free Dr Pepper coupons in the inserts of newspapers. If you don’t happen to have one of those handy the next time you go shopping, check out the coupon booklets often stacked at the front of grocery stores. Dr Pepper is such a widespread, popular product that their coupons are likely to appear in these booklets.

Rockstar Energy Drink Coupons 2012

I’m not a kid anymore, so I don’t entirely understand the fascination with energy drinks. If I were going to try the product on a consistent basis, however, I’d probably go with Rockstar energy drinks. First, I’ve found that free Rockstar energy drink coupons are easy to come by, which allows me to save money on each purchase. Second, it’s got the same name as the video game designers responsible for the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The latter may seem like a poor reason to choose a product, but I really enjoy being able to pick off people with a sniper rifle and murder prostitutes with a baseball bat. I would never commit such acts in real life, but I’m betting that Rockstar energy drinks would give me the necessary energy to do so.

The only time I feel like I need an energy drink is when I watch awful movies. Sitting in the dark in a comfortable chair, it’s a challenge to stay awake through films like The Thin Red Line, Titanic, and anything put out by Michael Bay. The next time I plan a night of cinema with my pals, maybe I’ll print off some printable Rockstar energy drink coupons (the online, printable version will also work) and stock up on the product.

History of Rockstar Energy Drinks

Rockstar was founded by Russell Weiner (I’m sure he had a pleasant childhood) in 1999, and immediately sought to compete against Red Bull by offering a can twice as big for the same price. By 2008, Rockstar had captured 14% of the global energy drink market, and it’s currently being marketed in more than 20 nations across the globe.

2004 was a landmark year for the product, as the energy drink craze (marketed to teens and young adults) resulted in a 155% growth in sales and a total revenue of nearly $50 million. Despite claims of certain health risks, Rockstar has continued their rise to become one of the top three energy drinks in the U.S. market and abroad.

No doubt, Mr. Weiner is having the last laugh on his high school classmates. As I write this, half the people who used to taunt him are probably sitting around their dimly-lit kitchen tables and clipping free, 2011 Rockstar coupons.

Types of Rockstar Energy Drinks

The following list includes all the various types of Rockstar Energy Drinks currently available on the market. While I was aware of the original Rockstar brand, I was surprised to learn that so many other high-energy soft drinks were being sold. It’s a virtual wonderland for lovers of caffeinated beverages.

  • Original Rockstar

- The original brand of energy drink for those on the go, the classic Rockstar formula contains a massive dose of caffeine, as well as ginseng, milk thistle, guarana, and ginkgo. For best results, serve chilled. Whenever I get my hands on Rockstar energy drink coupons, this is the product I’ll be buying.

  • Sugar Free Rockstar

- With zero carbs and plenty of milk thistle, this sugar free beverage provides a potent pick-me-up without expanding your waistline.

  • Zero Carb

- The flavor tastes like wild berries, but it also has zero carbohydrates and 50% more caffeine that a regular can of Rockstar. As always, serve chilled to get the maximum flavor.

  • Juiced – Mango

- All the energy of the original Rockstar drink, with the added flavors of orange, mango, and passion fruit.

  • Juiced – Guava

- Combines tropical guava juice with the original formula that’s made Rockstar so successful.

  • Punched

- Contains 50% more caffeine that the original Rockstar, Punched mixes the patented blend of guarana, milk thistle, ginseng, and ginkgo with a tangy series of tropical fruit flavors. Too bad they couldn’t have got Steven Seagal to endorse this one (since he punches people in the movies).

  • Punched – Citrus

- Citrus punch flavors are combined with the classic Rockstar energy formula.

  • Energy Cola

- Lightly carbonated, this energy drink is an ideal substitute for fans of Coke or Pepsi, but with more of a kick.

  • Recovery

- Made with real juices, this drink is perfect for providing hydration and recovery after intense physical exertion. Sold in grape, orange, and lemonade flavors, Recovery contains caffeine, vitamin B, and electrolytes.

  • Roasted

- The original Rockstar formula is combined with fresh milk and espresso coffee to surpass anything you could get at Starbucks. Four flavors are available, including Roasted Espresso, Mocha, Latte, and Light Vanilla (with half of the fat and calories of the other flavors). Each flavor contains 50% more caffeine that the classic Rockstar formula.

  • Energy Shots

- Each small bottle contains 200mg of caffeine, as well as ingredients such as taurine, guarana, ginseng, and vitamin B. Consumers can choose from Tropical Punch and Wild Berry flavor, and there are zero carbs to worry about.

  • Rockstar Energy Gum

- In addition to energy drinks, Rockstar also sells a line of gum guaranteed to boost your activity level. It’s sugar free, and each stick contains 80mg of caffeine for a quick boost of energy.

  • Rockstar Pink

- Marketed for females, this energy drink contains zero sugar, zero carbs, and only 10 calories per can. Consumers can also expect to get the total recommended daily allowance of five B-vitamins (with caffeine and ginseng thrown into the mix at no extra charge).

  • Rockstar 2X

- The strongest formula ever made by Rockstar, this brand includes twice the caffeine of the original formula, but with only 15 calories. There’s also a mixture of amino acids, vitamins, and herbs to lift your spirits and keep you going strong throughout the day.

Online, Printable Rockstar Coupons

I prefer online, printable Rockstar coupons, because I can find the specific item I’m looking for without having coupons fall all over my living room floor (which often happens when I’m trying to clip coupons from a newspaper). Whether I’m searching for 2011 coupons for Rockstar, or some later year, I can look forward to dozens of sites offering discounts and bargains. Just make sure you have a good anti-virus program, though, as certain sites may be infected. Personally, I have a few reliable coupon sites that I trust, and I visit them exclusively.

If you’re old school when it comes to savings, you can also find Rockstar coupons in the Sunday newspaper or in numerous magazines geared to a younger audience. This takes more time, as you have to sift through coupons for household goods and other products, but the end result is still the same.

A Final Word on Rockstar

In the middle of writing this article, I decided to go to the store and buy a can of the original Rockstar drink. I did get a bit jittery after finishing off the product, and I noticed from the label that it contained 62 grams of sugar and 280 calories. I don’t know if I’ll be buying any Rockstar in the future. Instead, I might stick with my first love: Dr Pepper. To read what I learned about Dr Pepper coupons, follow the handy link I provided.

Or maybe I’ll try Rockstar again–just in more moderation. If I do, I have two wonderful options for saving money. First, I can clip Rockstar energy drink coupons from the local newspaper or national magazines. Second, I can head to the Internet and find online, printable Rockstar coupons within a matter of minutes. Some of these discounts are good for 2011 and even 2012. Keep checking back and I’ll post others that can be redeemed even later. Whatever the case, saving money always makes me feel like a rock star.

Big Red Coupons – 2012, Online, Printable

I love Big Red. No, I’m not talking about the 1962 Disney movie with the rambunctious Irish Setter. I’m speaking of the tangy red drink that originated in Texas and boasts such fans as NBA legend Karl Malone, John Mellencamp, and the late Sammy Davis, Jr.

I live in Texas, so being able to drink Big Red as a child wasn’t difficult at all. The distinctively red soft drink is available everywhere in the Lone Star State, and you can also find it in 43 other states, Tahiti, and in Kuwait and Iraq courtesy of AAFES. Your best bet is to check the local Wal-Mart, and they have a longtime relationship with this tasty brand of soda pop.

But this article isn’t about extolling the virtues of a specific brand of soft drink. No, we’re gathered here to talk about Big Red coupons, from the online, printable versions to the ones you have to clip out like a little old lady. Since the economy has been in the crapper for years, anything you can do to save a dollar here or there is a good idea.

Big Red Flavors

Big Red coupons are available for all their brands, and a complete list of products can be found below

  • Big Red
  • Diet Big Red
  • Big Red Vanilla Float
  • Big Blue
  • Big Peach
  • Big Pineapple
  • Big Honey Lemonade
  • Big Orange
  • Retro Big Red
  • Red Jak Energy Drink
  • Lo Carb Red Jak Energy Drink

History of Big Red

The history of Big Red started in Waco, Texas in 1937 after R.H. Roark and Grover C. Thomsen mixed lemon and orange oils with vanilla. Their creation was originally known as Sun Tang Red Cream Soda, but the name was changed to Sun Tang Big Red Cream Soda in 1959. It was changed again in 1962, when a bottling plant bigwig from San Antonio overheard two golf caddies refer to the drink as simply Big Red.

In 1971, Sugar Free Big Red was introduced, and it would be followed by Diet Big Red in 1982. Long neck bottles would become available in 1988, and the familiar splash logo would hit the market in 1997. Residents of the Southeastern United States were in for a treat in 2001, as Big Pineapple was put on the shelves, and Big Punch made its debut three years later. The same year, Big Red Vanilla Float would appear for the first time at none other than the Kentucky Derby. Big Blue was introduced in 2008, and by that point the Big Red company was regularly ranking at the sixth largest soft drink manufacturer in America.

While it was originally sold in certain parts of Texas and in Louisville, Kentucky, Big Red has grown to be available in almost every state in the union. Other companies have tried to mimic the success of Big Red’s distinctive taste and color, but none have managed to unseat the beverage from the top of the cream soda mountain.

And just in case you’re wondering, a bottle of classic Big Red contains the following ingredients: carbonated water, natural and artificial flavor, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, caffeine, and red dye #40. The next time you have to buy bigger pants, blame the high fructose corn syrup.

Nutritional Facts for Big Red

The information listed below contains the nutritional facts for a 20 oz. bottle of regular Big Red.

  • Calories – 250
  • Total Fat – 0
  • Sodium – 50mg
  • Total Carbohydrates – 63g
  • Protein – 0

If you’re worried about sucking down too much caffeine when you drink soda pops, remember that a 12 oz. bottle of Big Red, Big Red Vanilla Float, and Diet Big Red all contain 38mg of caffeine. Big Blue is a little less at 35mg per 2 oz. bottle, while Big Pineapple and Big Peach are the least with 19mg.

Big Red Coupons

I like saving money by using Big Red coupons, and I’ve found my local Sunday newspaper to be a treasure trove of value. You can do the same thing, so don’t be afraid to wade into that massive Sunday issue and set aside all the Big Red coupons (as well as those for other soft drinks and beverages).

A number of national magazines should also carry coupons, and I sometimes get direct-mail discounts delivered right to my mailbox. In either case, you’ll be able to get an immediate bargain on 12-packs of Big Red, or buy a few cartons and get another one for free.

Online, Printable Big Red Coupons

For those who’ve graduated to the age of the Internet, you may also want to search for online, printable Big Red coupons. These work just like the coupons you find in the newspaper, except you print them out on your computer.

I checked the official Big Red website, but they didn’t offer any discounts on their products. Unless you’re interested in reading the nutritional information for each of their items, you’ll have better luck elsewhere.

I suggest doing a Google search for the terms “Big Red coupons,” “2011 Big Red Coupons,” or “online Big Red coupons.” Just make sure your anti-virus program is running properly, as not every site listed will be entirely safe. When you do locate a quality coupons site that’s virus-free, be sure to bookmark it and visit regularly.

Getting Rid of Big Red Stains

When I drink Big Red while playing video games or watching movies in the darkness of my living room, there’s always the risk that I’m going to spill a little on my shirt. Luckily, I came across a solution while writing this article, and I wanted to share it with my readers.

If you get a Big Red stain, try to fix it as soon as possible. Combine three parts water with one part dish detergent, and blot the stain until it comes out. Do not rub at the stain, as this can make it worse. And whatever you do, don’t expose a stain to hot water, as this will cause it to set.

In Conclusion

Residents of the Southern United States have long enjoyed the taste of Big Red, and now people all over the nation are finally catching on. If you like cream soda with a tangy burst of flavor, why not give it a try? Even if you’re unsure about the product, purchasing it with Big Red coupons will allow you to sample a few cans without breaking your bank account. And the next time you’re at the movies, try sneaking in a bottle of Big Red and adding it to a cup of Coca-Cola. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the results.

If you like printable Big Red coupons, you’ll love free Dr Pepper coupons.

Red Bull Coupons – Online, Printable, 2012

Red Bull: It gives you wings. If you’ve watched any amount of television over the last several years, you’d be hard-pressed to miss this distinctive advertising campaign. It’s worked, too, as Red Bull is the most successful producer of energy drinks on the planet (over 3 billion cans sold each year).

I can take or leave Red Bull, myself, as I enjoy the caffeine high but don’t care so much for the taste. That’s just my opinion, though, and it certainly doesn’t stop me from collecting Red Bull coupons whenever the chance arises. So the next time you’re looking for an alternative to soft drinks, consider this high-energy line of beverages.

It can be especially handy when you need a pick-me-up during a boring film. I have a friend who tends to fall asleep as soon as the light go out during our weekly movie night, but we’ve found that a can a Red Bull beforehand greatly improves his ability to stay awake. Of course, if I’m stuck watching a Katherine Heigl movie with my girlfriend, all I want to do is count some sheep.

Red Bull Products

As of 2011, the Red Bull products listed below are available in the United States. This will likely change over time, so check the official website for a definitive rundown.

  • Red Bull Energy Drink (the standard Red Bull product in the distinctive silver and blue can)
  • Red Bull Sugarfree (just like original Red Bull, but without any of the sugar)
  • Red Bull Energy Shots (comes in a 2 oz. size and doesn’t need to be refrigerated, making it an ideal option for people on the go)
  • Red Bull Cola (a natural cola with a distinctive Red Bull kick)

So the next time you’ve got yourself a handful of Red Bull coupons, pick one or more of the above items and go nuts.

Benefits of Red Bull

According to the Red Bull website, a single can of their product is supposed to offer the following benefits:

  • Increases performance
  • Improves the emotional status
  • Stimulates metabolism
  • Increases reaction speed and concentration
  • Improves vigilance

I’ve never needed to be vigilant while drinking Red Bull, so I can’t verify that claim one way or the other. It does, however, stimulate the ‘ol metabolism with a vengeance, especially in younger folks. The emotional status claim is a complete crock, though, as jerks who guzzle down a can are just as bad afterwards (and now they have more energy). Remember: If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. The company would likely disagree, especially since they claim to have scientific date that backs up their findings.

Some movie theatres are in the habit of selling Red Bull, although this isn’t a policy that I’m fond of. Teens and tweens are obnoxious enough in the dark with their texting and cell phone use, and jacking them up on caffeine doesn’t make things any better.

History of Red Bull

Before we discuss Red Bull coupons (including the free, online variety), let’s look at the history of the company. This kind of stuff always amazes me, because it demonstrates how much money can be made by following your dreams, being bold, and coming up with a good idea.

Back in 1987, an Austrian businessman named Dietrich Mateschitz decided to take the Thai energy drink known as Krating Daeng and market it for a Western audience. He changed the ingredients and the name, but he also had the good sense to bring aboard Chaleo Yoovidhya, the inventor of the original beverage.

Red Bull is sold in a distinctive silver and blue can that’s taller and thinner than most products. Its inspiration, Krating Daeng, is now marketed throughout Asia as Red Bull Classic or under the original name.

After a few years of working out the kinks, Red Bull hit the international market when it was released in Slovenia and Hungary. The beverage was an immediate success, and it was quickly competing with traditional soft drinks.

1997 saw Red Bull make its debut in the United States, and it has since become a staple for youngsters and extreme sports types (I’m neither, by the way). In 2000, Red Bull would also make its way to the Middle East.

Red Bull sponsors a number of sporting events aimed at their target audience, and they’ve recruited everyone from Eminem to NFL running back Reggie Bush to serve as pitchmen. It’s hard to argue with their strategy, as both Mateschitz and Chaleo are estimated to be worth several billion dollars. Red Bull also owns sports teams (such as RB Leipzig, FC Red Bull Salzburg, and Red Bull New York) and a record label specializing in youth-oriented music.

There have been some concerns over possible health risks associated with Red Bull, but studies have found that the danger isn’t any higher than drinking a cup of coffee. Those with high blood pressure or under extreme stress should exercise caution, however. While initially banned in France, Denmark and Norway over health concerns, the product is now sold in all three nations.

Red Bull Nutritional Information

The following is a list of nutritional information as found on the side of an 8.3 oz. can of traditional Red Bull.

  • Calories – 110
  • Total Fat – 0
  • Cholesterol – 0
  • Sodium – 200mg
  • Total Carbohydrates – 28g
  • Protein – less than 1g
  • While the calories are about the same as a can of Coke or Mountain Dew, Red Bull really leads the pack when it comes to sodium. If you’re concerned about such things, you might want to think twice before chugging down several cans of the beverage.Red Bull Coupons

As an admitted caffeine addict, I love Red Bull coupons. Since I’m not a senior citizen, the idea of clipping coupons never appealed to me, but I’ve really gotten into the online, printable coupons in recent years. With just a few clicks of my mouse, I’m printing out free Red Bull coupons and getting ready to save myself some money.

If you’d like to do the same, this section described the best place to find free Red Bull coupons in 2011 or beyond. But be careful: collecting coupons can be surprisingly addictive. Before you know it, you’ll be planning the rest of week around bingo and Wheel of Fortune.

The best places to find Red Bull coupons are in grocery store circulars, coupon packs received in the mail, and the Sunday edition of the newspaper. National magazines are also an option, and Red Bull coupons will likely turn up in those publications aimed at the youth market.

In addition to the clippable variety, online, printable Red Bull coupons can also be found on the Internet. I like to start with the product’s official website, although I didn’t see any available discounts when I visited Red Bull’s online home. A Google search will turn up a range of other options, although you should be prepared to run across a number of sites that don’t offer what they promise. If you find a quality website that offers the 2011 Red Bull coupons you’re looking for, I’d recommend placing it in your favorites. On the following page, you can read more about 2012 Dr Pepper coupons.

    In Conclusion

Red Bull is a fine alternative for those looking for a caffeine boost, although I’d prefer to drink a cup of coffee or have a refreshing Coke. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t like Red Bull; it’s simply not my first choice. You may be just the opposite, so you’ll appreciate the ease with which you can locate Red Bull coupons online and in print.

Hansen Natural Coupons – 2012, Online, Printable

Hansen Natural got its start by selling to Hollywood movie studios, so I thought it would make an appropriate topic for our Odd Films blog. The company has been distributing soft drinks and juice for over 70 years, and Hansen’s Natural has been the leading brand of additive-free beverages in Southern California for three decades.

I’ve grown weary of watching my belly expand because of Coca-Cola and other high fructose corn syrup products, so I decided to give Hansen’s Natural products a try. It took a bit a doing to find them at first, because they’re usually located in the natural (aka organic) section of the supermarket. But once I finally tracked them down, I was pleasantly surprised by all the flavors available. I was also happy to see that Hansen Natural coupons are available, allowing me to save a dollar or two on each purchase.

History of Hansen’s Natural

Before we discuss available flavors and Hansen Natural coupons, let’s take a look at the history of this innovative beverage company.

Hubert Hanson and his three sons got started by selling juice to Hollywood studios back in the 1930s. From there, they formed a company known as Hansen’s Juices, although the title would later be changed to The Fresh Juice Company of California, Inc.

Their first plant opened in 1946, and it would remain in Los Angeles until being relocated in 1993. The company took another step forward in the 1970s, when the grandson of Hubert Hansen decides to create and market a brand of natural soft drinks. It was an idea ahead of its time, and the current market is only now beginning to catch up with the vision of Tim Hansen.

Hansen’s filed for bankruptcy in 1988 and was purchased by California CoPackers Corporation, who started marketing the product under the title of Hansen Beverage Company. Under their ownership, Hansen’s has experienced rapid growth in the 21st century, thanks in part to the increased demand for foods and beverages without preservatives. Look for Hansen Natural to remain a leading distributor of soft drinks and soda pops in 2011 and beyond.

Hansen’s Natural Products

The following is a rundown of all the Hansen products currently available. Be sure to check their official site every few months, as new flavors of juice and soft drinks may be added at any time.

  • Hansen’s Energy Drinks – I can honestly say that I’ve never tried an energy drink in my life. While I’m not opposed to the concept, there’s just never been a reason for me to do so. Still, if I were going to start guzzling energy drinks, Hansen’s would be the brand that I‘d choose. Their Rumba line offers a citrus flavor with Original Formula and Diet Red Energy being available. Meanwhile, their line of Primal Energy Tea features Amazon Citrus Green Tea, Pomegranate Green Tea, and Sugar Free Pomegranate Green Tea.
  • Hansen’s Juice – I enjoy natural juices (that’s what she said), so I was delighted to see that these were offered. When I get my hands on some printable Hansen Natural coupons, you can bet I’ll be giving them a try. Their line of bottled juice includes Apple Juice, Apple Grape Juice, Apple Strawberry Juice, Organic Apple Wild Berry Juice, Organic Apple White Grape Juice, Organic Apple Juice, Grape Juice, White Grape Juice, Pomegranate Juice Cocktail.

Featuring a blend of fruit juices and nutrients, the Smoothie brand comes in the following flavors: Pineapple Coconut Smoothie, Strawberry Banana Smoothie, Mango Pineapple Smoothie, Guava Strawberry Smoothie, Peach Berry Smoothie, Energy Island Blast.
  • Hansen Natural Ready-to-Drink Teas – I’m from Texas, so I know my way around a glass of tea. Bottled tea isn’t bad either, and these all-natural options are offered in the following flavors: Iced Green Tea, Peach Green Tea, Sugar Free Peach Green Tea, Pomegranate Green Tea, Lychee Black Tea, Unsweetened Black Tea with Lemon, Sugar Free Pomegranate Green Tea, Sugar Free Acai Black Tea.
  • Fizzit – I don’t lead the healthiest lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean I can’t drink like I do. The Fizzit line of beverages include amino acids, electrolytes (I’m always reminded of Idiocracy), herbal extracts, and antioxidants. Each formula features a different mix of healthy goodness, and they include Joint Formula, Immune Support Formula, Women’s Health Formula, and Multi-Vitamin & Minerals Formula. Flavors include Raspberry, Cranberry, Orange, Lemon Lime, Green Tea, and Strawberry.

Hansen Natural Coupons

Whether you’re looking for online, printable Hansen Natural coupons or the kind you have to cut out with scissors, you’ll be happy to know that your pals in Southern California have obliged. While Hansen Natural coupons aren’t as abundant as those from Coke or Pepsi, you will find the occasional deal in a newspaper or magazine. The same is true for the Internet, where plenty of sites offer Hansen Natural coupons for 2011 and beyond.

If you run a youth soccer team, be sure to visit Hansen’s website and find out more about their Official Team Refreshment Book. This book has over $100 in coupons and rebates on Hansen’s products, including stickers for everyone and a log to keep track of post-game snacks. My own childhood soccer career was pretty unexceptional (we won one game during my lone season), but I’m guessing that the delicious taste of Hansen’s would’ve made it all better.

Americans are getting increasingly fat, and this is due in large part to all the preservatives we’re putting in our bodies via soft drinks and soda pops. If you’d like to reverse that trend, you need to focus on foods and beverages with no additives and an all-natural flair. That’s where Hansen’s comes into play, as their products offer a delicious alternative to the high fructose corn syrup crowd. Thanks to the availability of Hansen’s Natural coupons, I’ve been using their products exclusively for a few months, and I’ve never felt better. Besides, anything that’s good enough for Hollywood executives in the 1930s is good enough for me.

Unusual Soft Drinks to Drink While Watching Movies in 2012

As much as I love to drink Coca-Cola while I watch my latest Netflix selection, I also like to mix things up once in a while. That’s why I’ve created this list of unusual soft drinks to drink while watching movies. Granted, I haven’t tried any of them yet, but I have every intention of doing so once I work up the courage. And if you’ve already beaten me to the punch on one or more of these, be sure to let us know in the comments section.

  • Hansen’s – If you’re looking for a boost of energy while you watch your movie, give their Monster Energy brand a look. It has a tremendous amount of caffeine, enough to even get your through titles like Syriana and The Thin Red Line. If, on the other hand, you prefer a more natural beverage, Hansen’s natural soda line contains no preservatives, caffeine, sodium, or artificial flavors. Monster Energy can be found at any convenience store, while the others (including flavors such as Mango Orange, Mandarin Lime, Ginger Ale, and Creamy Root Beer) are usually sold in the U.S. in the organic foods section.
  • Jones Soda – The wacky folks over at Jones Soda are always coming out with unique soft drink flavors. Their pure cane soda line includes Green Apple, Strawberry Lime, Blue Bubblegum, and Fufu Berry, while they also distribute an energy supplement marketed under the name of WhoopAss (slogan: “Open a can of WhoopAss”). They also have a number of popular limited edition soda pops, such as their tie-ins with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dungeons & Dragons, and the satirical news site known as The Onion. But they really made a splash by unveiling their holiday line, including such memorable classics as Dinner Roll, Green Bean Casserole, Turkey & Gravy, Pumpkin Pie, and Mashed Potatoes. I’m staying away from the holiday-themes flavors, but I might track down the D&D line just to show my support.
  • Irn-Bru – This Scottish soft drink (pronounced “iron brew”) has been made in Glasgow for more than a century and is sold throughout the United Kingdom and wherever else lots of Scots live. Energy drinks and low-calorie versions have been released in recent years, and it gives brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi a run for their money in Irn-Bru’s country of origin. The slogan even draws from the movies, taking Mike Myer’s famous quote “If it’s not Scottish, it’s crap” and turning it into their battle cry.
  • Sake – Want to get drunk off your ass while watching Akira Kurosawa films? If so, be sure to suck down large quantities of sake (you can drink it hot or cold). Made from rice that‘s been boiled and fermented, it’s an alcoholic beverage that enjoys international popularity and includes a variety of flavors. Just make sure to keep your samurai sword nearby while drinking, as that’s usually when the ninjas attack.
  • Zam Zam Cola – If you live in the Middle East and don’t wish to imbibe soft drinks made by those devils in the Western world, then give this Arab alternative to Coke and Pepsi a try. Still available in glass bottles, it’s the perfect companion to a film like The Hurt Locker or any of those Iranian films that keep getting their directors imprisoned.
  • Cheerwine – Produced in North Carolina of all places, this soft drink has been thrilling customers with a distinctive cherry taste since 1917. While it’s red and bubbly, rest assured that Cheerwine contains no alcohol (although you can add your own if you really need to). For those who like to think of themselves as retro, they offer a version made with pure cane sugar and sold in glass bottles. While I’ve never been to North Carolina, now I have a reason to go.
  • Synthetic Blood Drink – Sold in (where else?) the United States, this ghoulish treat comes in a package that resembles an IV bag and contains electrolytes, iron, and protein (just like the real thing). The color and consistency are amazingly similar to blood, making this the perfect cinematic treat while watching Blade, Twilight, or episodes of True Blood.
  • Guaraná Jesus – Made by a Coca-Cola bottler in Brazil, this South American soft drink occasionally outsells Coke in the region. Named for the druggist who invented the concoction in 1920, Guarana Jesus is known for its sweet taste, cinnamon smell, and pink coloring (the latter being responsible for its nickname as “the pink dream”). If I ever get to Brazil, I’m going to drink one of these while looking at that giant statue of the other Jesus.
  • Human Breast Milk – Just thinking about this Asian product reminds me of the scene on Chappelle’s Show where P. Diddy (aka Dave Chappelle) demands a group of reality contestants track down a Cambodian woman and extract breast milk from her (“Breast milk…you make my day-ay.”). This is a very real product, however, so be careful when buying milk on your next trip to an Asian supermarket.
  • Tim Tam Slam – While this technically doesn’t fall under the category of “good soft drinks to drink while watching movies,” I still felt compelled to add it to the list. The main ingredient in this Australian snack is Tim Tam, an Aussie sandwich cookie (also available in Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and parts of the United States). Once you’ve got your hands on the cookies, brew up the hot beverage of your choice (such as coffee or tea), dip the cookie into the liquid, and enjoy the tasty flavor. I may give this one a try the next time I watch Crocodile Dundee or The Road Warrior. And if you can’t get your hands on any Tim Tams, you can substitute any sandwich cookie that’s coated in a thin layer of chocolate.
  • Masala Chai – Popular in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, this hot beverage combines milk and black tea with water that’s been seasoned by ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and green cardamom. You can find street vendors selling this on every corner in India, which makes it the perfect beverage for a viewing of Slumdog Millionaire.
  • Bird’s Nest Drink – This is actually sold in a can in China (and often advertised as including “jelly bits”). The drink is created by taking the nests of cave-dwelling birds and removing the sticky substance that the birds regurgitate to make their fragile homes stick to the wall. I’ll give a standing ovation to anyone our there who’s got the guts to down a can of Bird’s Nest Drink while watching Red Cliff or Hero.
  • Canelazo – Popular in Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador, this drink falls into the alcoholic beverage category thanks to a mixture of aguardiente (cane sugar alcohol), panela (brown cane sugar), cloves, and cinnamon stick. The Ecuadorians add in a twist by combining the above ingredients with naranjilla, a fruit that looks like an orange and tastes sort of like a pineapple. Always served warm, it’s the perfect companion while watching movies made (or set) in South America.

So the next time that iced tea or bottled water just won’t cut it, think back to this list of unusual soft drinks to drink while watching movies and take a walk on the wild side. Granted, drinking Jones Soda isn’t quite as daring as gulping down a carton of human breast milk, but we all move at our own pace.

Bigger Than Life Blu-ray Review

Here’s my Bigger Than Life Blu-ray review.

I saw Bigger Than Life with my wife and my sixteen year old son on June 6, 2011, and I’m only now getting around to writing my review. For what it’s worth, my wife said it was, “okay.” My sixteen year old son slept through the final 2/3 of the movie, but that says more about my son that it does about the film.

Bigger Than Life is a rare film. James Mason stars as a mild-mannered schoolteacher. Since James Mason invariably plays sleazy, villainous types, it’s a treat to get to see him play such a great father. Early in the movie we see how easygoing he is as a teacher, and we also see what a devoted husband and father he is. He even works a second job at a garage dispatching cabs, but he’s too nice a guy to tell his wife what he’s doing. She would think it’s beneath him, but he needs the money to pay the bills.

Bigger Than Life Blu-ray Review - The Criterion Collection

But the character has a medical problem, and soon he’s addicted to a drug, which causes him to become a strange and psychotic giant of a man who rules over his wife and son with an iron fist. The contrast between the character’s personality before and after his dependence on the drug is one of the strong points of the film.

But this is not Reefer Madness. The changes in his personality are subtle at first. He grows arrogant and extravagant, but eventually he’s almost frothing at the mouth with psychosis. Throughout the transformation, James Mason is believable. The acting style from the 1950′s was a little more over-the-top by today’s standards, but he manages to play his role with a certain amount of subtlety. Even at his craziest, he seemed like a sympathetic, believable character.

On the other hand, his wife’s submissions to his new quirks seems unbelievable in today’s society. For that matter, his son’s submissiveness is also hard to believe, although his son does finally try to do something about the situation, which showed a little bit of rebellion and courage. But 1856 was a far different time from 2011.

The photography for this film was gorgeous. Some of the shots have haunted me for the last couple of days. A couple of scenes where James Mason is visible in his reflection in a broken mirror were especially powerful, and I also liked how in many of the scenes the camera was set low so as to look up at the actor, making him visually bigger than life.

A young Walter Matthau co-stars as the gym teacher, who’s also something of a ladies’ man. His character is a close friend of the family’s, but his role is smaller than I expected it to be. Still, it’s always fun to see Walter Matthau in an older movie where he’s playing someone less curmudgeonly than his stereotype became later in his career. He delivers a solid performance.

The only extra feature on the Blu-ray of Bigger Than Life that I got to watch was the original theatrical trailer. That was fun, because in the 1950′s, movie trailers were very different from the way they are now. The trailer begins with James Mason sitting in the studio, looking at the camera. “Hello, I’m James Mason, ” he begins. Then he describes the plot of the movie and why you should see it.

I guess this particular subject matter was shocking at the time. It’s less shocking now, because God knows there are plenty of movies about drugs and drug abuse to watch. But the performances and the direction are excellent, and the movie is a pleasure to watch. I’d recommend it to anyone. Small children might find some of the film disturbing, though.

37 Movies with Rappers

Hip-Hop Artists in Film

We all know that rappers are good at rhyming, wearing bling, and getting shot at, but did you know that many have also carved out successful acting careers for themselves? This list of 37 movies with rappers is a testament to their business acumen, and the projects range from stoner comedies and gritty urban dramas to low-budget horror flicks. No matter what kind of film you like, there’s a good chance that it’s got a rapper in it.

  • 8 Mile (2002) – Eminem channels white boy angst as Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith, Jr., an aspiring rapper living a trailer trash existence in Detroit. Co-starring Xzibit, Obie Trice, and Proof. Kim Basinger is a standout as his hoe mom.
  • Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (2005) – In a film loosely based on his life, 50 Cent stars as Marcus, a former drug dealer looking to achieve rap stardom despite numerous challenges and enemies. Co-starring Terrence Howard, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Viola Davis. Directed by frequent Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father).

  • Boyz n the Hood (1991) – Writer-director John Singleton shot to stardom with his tale of troubled teens living in South Central Los Angeles. Ice Cube appears as gang member Darrin “Doughboy” Baker, while Cuba Gooding, Jr. headlines as the sympathetic Tre Styles.

Rapper/producer Dr. Dre has a supporting role as a member of Alonzo’s team, while Snoop Dogg gets to puke up bags of crack as a wheelchair-bound drug dealer.
  • Trespass (1992) – Bill Paxton and William Sadler are a pair of firemen in search of hidden gold, while Ice-T and Ice Cube are gang members trying to steal the treasure for themselves and cap a couple of white boys. Directed by Walter Hill (48 Hrs. and The Warriors).
  • Lottery Ticket (2010) – A good-natured black comedy about a young man (Bow Wow) who wins a $370 million lottery drawing but must hold onto the ticket for several days while being pursued by friends, family, and complete strangers. The supporting cast includes Ice Cube, T-Pain, Lil Twist, Keith David, Charlie Murphy, Brandon T. Jackson, and Naturi Naughton.
  • Last Holiday (2006) – A romantic comedy about a department store employee who decides to take a dream holiday when she believes she’s dying of cancer. LL Cool J plays a co-worker and the object of her affection. A remake of a film from 1950, although that one didn’t feature any rappers.
  • Posse (1993) – Mario Van Peebles tries his hand at the Western genre, assembling a cast of diverse actors for a tale of revenge and stolen gold. Members of the posse include Mario Van Peebles, Stephen Baldwin, Big Daddy Kane, and Tone Loc. Billy Zane is the bad guy who (surprisingly) winds up being a racist.
  • Hustle & Flow (2005) – Terrence Howard is DJay, a pimp and petty criminal who dreams of making it in the rap game. The film details his efforts to record songs, hustle money, and get a famous rapper (Ludacris) to listen to his demo. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
  • How High (2001) – A pair of stoners (Method Man and Redman) ace their college entrance exams and wind up being accepted at Harvard. Cypress Hill appear as themselves.

  • Cool as Ice (1991) – Vanilla Ice in his first (and last) major motion picture. He plays a rapper with a love for motorcycles who winds up falling for an honor student whose dad is in the witness protection program. Kristin Minter plays the love interest, but the role was originally offered to Gwyneth Paltrow (her father wouldn’t let her do it).
  • New Jack City – Director Mario Van Peebles struck paydirt with this stylish look at the ongoing struggle between cops and drug dealers. Wesley Snipes plays charismatic and ill-tempered drug lord Nino Brown, while Ice-T is the streetwise cop dedicated to taking him down. The film would have a massive impact on the hip-hop scene.
  • Just Wright (2010) – Rapper-actor Common stars as an injured NBA player, while Queen Latifah is the physical therapist who nurses him back to health and falls in love. NBA cameos include Dwyane Wade, Marv Albert, LeBron James, Dwight Howard, and Rashard Lewis.
  • Friday (1995) – Ice Cube and Chris Tucker star in this urban comedy about two pals who only have a few hours to come up with $200 to pay off a violent drug dealer. Co-starring Nia Long, Faizon Love, DJ Pooh, Bernie Mac, Tiny Lister Jr., and Tony Cox.
  • Cradle 2 the Grave (2003) – DMX is a thief and Jet Li is a special agent from Taiwan. They eventually team up to take on a ruthless martial arts master (Mark Dacascos) in search of stolen black diamonds. Gabrielle Union and Kelly Hu provide the sex appeal, and other members of the cast include Chi McBride, Tom Arnold, and Anthony Anderson.
  • Who’s the Man? (1993) – Doctor Dre and Ed Lover star as a pair of barbers-turned-cops who investigate the murder of a close friend. Cameos abound, including Run-DMC, Ice-T, Busta Rhymes, Kriss Kross, House of Pain, Flavor Flav, Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature, KRS-One, Humpty Hump, Bushwick Bill, Heavy D, and many more.
  • Halloween H20 (1998) – Set 20 years after the events in the original John Carpenter film, this seventh movie in the franchise finds unstoppable psycho Michael Myers once again trying to kill off his sister, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). LL Cool J appears as a security guard who aspires to be a novelist, and other familiar faces include Josh Hartnett, Michelle Williams, Adam Arkin, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
  • Halloween: Resurrection (2002) – This horror movie marks the eighth film in the series, and Michael Myers once again battles a rapper. This time it’s Busta Rhymes, as he plays the host of an Internet reality show about a group of teens who unwisely journey to the killer’s family home on Halloween night. Guess what happens next.
  • The Wash (2001) – Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog are roommates who work at a car wash while trying to scrape together enough money to pay their rent. Hijinks ensue. Also starring George Wallace, Eminem, Tommy Chong, Kurupt, Ludacris, Xzibit, Martin Lawrence, and Shaquille O’Neal.

  • Big Money Hustlas (2000) – Shaggy 2 Dope of the Insane Clown Posse stars as Sugar Bear, a San Francisco cop who travels to New York City to take down a crime lord (ICP bandmate Violent J). Dolemite (aka Rudy Ray Moore) makes a cameo, and other supporting players include Harland Williams, Mick Foley, Jamie Madrox, Monoxide Child, and Kayla Kleevage. This straight-to-DVD hit frequently pays homage to the exploitation films of the 1970s, and it would be followed by the sequel, Big Money Rustlas.
  • Roadside Prophets (1992) – A biker makes his way across the desert looking for a place to scatter his friend’s ashes. He’s joined in his journey by an oddball named Sam (Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys), and cameos include Arlo Guthrie and Timothy Leary. If you’re looking for a movie to watch while getting high, put this one on the list.
  • Gang Related (1997) – A modern noir movie about two cops (James Belushi and Tupac Shakur) who inadvertently kill a DEA agent and then seek to frame someone else for the killing. This would be Tupac’s last feature film, and co-stars include Dennis Quaid, James Earl Jones, and Kool Moe Dee.
  • Starsky & Hutch – Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson play it for laughs while adapting the 1970’s cop show to the big screen. Vince Vaughn is the bad guy, and Snoop Dogg radiates cool as the police informant known as Huggy Bear.
  • Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) – Jim Jarmusch’s inventive indie feature includes 11 short stories linked by a common theme of coffee and cigarettes. The “movies with rappers” element turns up in the segment entitled “Delirium,” when RZA and GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan discuss the dangers of caffeine and nicotine with Bill Murray (who plays himself working as a waiter).
  • Chicago (2002) – Winner of the Best Picture Oscar, this adaptation of the stage musical stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger as a pair of murderesses who sing and dance more than the average inmate. Queen Latifah co-stars as the corrupt, lesbian matron where the women are incarcerated.
  • Dark Blue (2003) – Set just before the L.A. Riots, this cop drama stars Kurt Russell as a cop up to his neck in murder and corruption. Scott Speedman is the idealistic officer trying to bring him down, while Dash Mihok and Kurupt are a pair of murderous drug addicts in the employee of an LAPD officer (Brendan Gleeson). Also look for Master P in a small role.
  • Barbershop (2002) – Tired of scrambling to keep his Chicago barbershop open, a scheming entrepreneur (Ice Cube) sells it off to a local loan shark (Keith David). But when he learns of the plan to turn the place into a strip club, he immediately begins looking for a way to buy it back.
  • Judgment Day (1993) – House of Pain frontman Everlast has a supporting role in this film about a group of friends (Emilio Estevez, Jeremy Piven, Stephen Dorff, and Cuba Gooding.
